World Bank Young Professionals applications are open
The World Bank Group Young Professionals Program opened on 1 September and closes on 30 September at 23:59 UTC. Core requirements include a graduate-level degree in a relevant field completed before the September 2027 start date, and two to six years of qualifying full-time professional experience in the related work area as of 1 September 2026. There is no age requirement.
Successful candidates receive a two-year GF-level term appointment, followed by five years based on performance. The programme includes three eight-month rotations: one cross-institutional and at least one in a country office. Candidates submit one application with a primary stream and up to two alternatives. Applicants should make that stream a close technical match and use specific results to demonstrate fit.
UNICEF has four specialist consultancies open
Between 3 and 6 September, UNICEF advertised four relevant consultancies. An office-based EdTech assessment and operations role in Helsinki closes on 10 September. An environmental and social safeguards role in Kabul closes on 12 September. A remote gender, inclusion and climate-resilience role linked to Bangkok closes on 17 September, while a Green Rising role listed as New York/remote closes on 20 September.
These are consultancy contracts and do not confer staff status. Тhey favour specialists who combine domain knowledge with evidence synthesis, programme design, operational systems, facilitation and donor-facing work. Check each listing's eligibility, location and proposal requirements; "remote" does not mean worldwide eligibility.
AfDB-funded procurement has two live calls
Somalia's Ministry of Finance is seeking an individual macroeconomic expert for the Central Bank of Somalia. The deadline is 10 September at 12:30 Mogadishu time. The notice asks for a relevant master's degree, at least ten years of experience, and strength in macroeconomic modelling and forecasting.
Smart Africa is also seeking a firm to design, build and pilot an AI-powered transaction trust-scoring SDK. Expressions of interest close on 15 September at 17:00 Kigali time; joint ventures are allowed. The six-month assignment covers architecture, risk scoring, explainability, interoperability, security, governance, validation, documentation and training. The first call is for an individual consultant. The second is for a firm, so specialists will usually take part through a bidder or consortium.
UNHCR's smaller workforce tightens competition
In a 4 September Member State briefing, UNHCR said it had lost nearly 35% of its staff following the budget contraction. About 1,150 international colleagues entered its placement and reduction process; more than 180 were placed and a significant number will leave. Its former Staff in Between-Assignments mechanism will be replaced by a Redeployment Pool for international professional staff approaching the end of an assignment. Pool members will receive priority consideration for suitable vacancies.
External applicants should expect tougher competition for relevant international posts while eligible internal staff receive priority through the pool. UNHCR described its future workforce as more skills-based and mobile, while preserving field experience and protection expertise. The briefing did not announce a hiring freeze.
UNICLI is approved for a 2027 launch
The General Assembly approved UNSSC's merger into UNITAR and the creation of the United Nations Institute for Capability and Learning Innovation. UNICLI is due to start on 1 January 2027. The organisations remain separate through 2026, with structures and systems harmonised during 2027.
Candidates in learning design, leadership development, digital learning, knowledge management and organisational change should search all three institutional names during the transition. The announcement included no staffing plan or recruitment round.
ADB expands its North Pacific presence
On 1 September, ADB launched the upgrade of its Pohnpei office to a North Pacific Subregional Office, expected to operate before year-end. A private-sector hub in Palau will serve Palau, the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia.
Candidates with experience in country operations, private investment, public finance or energy now have a specific Pacific expansion to watch. The release made no commitment to new vacancies, so check ADB recruitment and project procurement separately.
What candidates should take from this week
For suitable candidates, deadlines fall on 10 September for UNICEF EdTech and Somalia, 12 September for UNICEF safeguards, 15 September for Smart Africa, 17 and 20 September for UNICEF, and 30 September for the World Bank. Beyond those dates, UNHCR's internal pool will make external competition for relevant international posts tougher, UNICLI is entering a transition year, and ADB is expanding in the Pacific. Staff programmes, individual consultancies and firm procurement each have a different application process.
